Gated, camera-monitored storage
Your belongings deserve more than a padlock. Every unit and parking space at Free State Storage is protected by layered security systems that work around the clock.
Multi-layered protection for your belongings
Six integrated security measures that work together to keep your stored items safe at all times.
24/7 Video Surveillance
HD cameras cover entry points, access lanes, unit rows, and the perimeter. Continuous recording day and night creates a complete visual record of activity.
Coded Gate Access
Every tenant gets a unique personal code. Only active tenants can enter — codes are deactivated the moment a tenant moves out. Every entry and exit is logged.
Perimeter Fencing
A sturdy fence encloses the property and funnels all traffic through the single monitored gate. No back-way access, no gaps.
Well-Lit Grounds
LED lighting illuminates access lanes, unit rows, parking, and the fence line. No dark corners, no shadows — full visibility from dusk to dawn.
Drive-Up Access
Drive-up units mean tenants and vehicles are always visible in the access lanes. Passive security by design — the property is never quiet.
Free Combination Padlock
Every unit comes with a high-collar, weather-resistant combination padlock at no charge. The raised collar shields the shackle from bolt cutters, the weather seal keeps it turning through Kansas winters, and there is no key to lose.
How our security infrastructure protects you
The role of surveillance in deterrence and documentation
Our HD surveillance system serves two purposes. First, visible cameras across the property act as a deterrent. When potential bad actors see cameras on every angle, most decide the risk isn't worth it.
Second, the system provides a continuous recorded history. If any incident occurs, we have clear footage to identify individuals, establish timelines, and support law enforcement. It also creates an environment of accountability — everyone on the property knows their actions are recorded.
Controlled access prevents unauthorized entry
Unlike facilities with a shared gate code or a basic key lock, our system assigns a unique code to every tenant. Individual codes mean every entry and exit is logged with a timestamp and specific tenant — a detailed access record invaluable for security monitoring.
Individual codes also let us control access in real time. When a tenant moves out, their code is deactivated immediately — eliminating the risk that former renters (or anyone they shared a code with) can access the property later. The electronic system is tamper-resistant, weather-rated, and battery-backed so the gate stays secure during power outages.
Physical barriers create clear boundaries
The perimeter fence establishes a clear physical boundary and channels all legitimate traffic through the single gated entry point — which is monitored by surveillance. Every vehicle and person entering the property passes through a controlled, recorded checkpoint.
Lighting eliminates hiding places
Criminals prefer darkness. Poorly lit facilities provide cover for tampering with locks and breaking into units. Our LED system floods the property with bright, consistent illumination from dusk to dawn. No dark corners, no shadowy gaps between buildings — and cleaner surveillance footage as a bonus.
The lock we provide
Many facilities either upsell locks or leave it to tenants to bring whatever they can find. We include a high-collar, weather-resistant combination padlock with every unit so the whole property has the same high baseline. The high collar shields the shackle from bolt cutters, the weather-resistant body keeps it working through ice and dust, and a combination means there is no key to lose or copy. Your combination goes to you alone when you rent; if you ever forget it, call us.
Protecting your investment
Our security systems do the heavy lifting — these habits give you even more confidence that your stored items stay safe.
Use the padlock we provide
We include it for a reason: a high-collar combination padlock sized for our hasps. Don't substitute a cheaper lock. Keep your combination to yourself, and if it's damaged, contact us for a replacement.
Never share your gate code
Your code is personal. Don't share it — even with friends or family helping you move. If someone needs to access your unit, come with them and enter the code yourself. If you suspect it's been shared, we'll issue a new one at no charge.
Keep a personal inventory
Photograph valuables before packing and keep a running list. If anything ever goes missing, you'll have documentation of exactly what was stored. It also helps you find things quickly, reducing how long your unit door stays open.
Visit your unit periodically
A monthly walk-through lets you verify everything is in order, check for moisture or pest activity, and confirm your lock is functioning. Regular visits also signal active monitoring — a deterrent in itself.
Store valuables wisely
Put high-value items toward the back and less valuable items in front. Use opaque, unmarked boxes rather than original product packaging — a box labeled 'Kitchen Supplies' is far less tempting than one with a TV brand on the side.
Consider tenant protection coverage
No matter how strong facility security is, unexpected events happen. Our tenant protection plan provides financial coverage for stored belongings — an affordable safety net beyond physical security.
Beyond physical security, tenant protection coverage adds a financial safety net for events outside anyone's control.
Security questions answered
Is the facility monitored 24 hours a day?
Yes. Our HD cameras record continuously, 24/7, 365 days a year. The system covers the gate, all access lanes, every row of units, the perimeter fence, and parking. No gaps, no scheduled downtime.
How does the coded gate access system work?
When you sign your lease and make your first payment, you receive a unique personal access code. Enter it on the keypad to open the gate. The system logs code, date, and time of every entry and exit. Only active tenants can open the gate — codes are deactivated immediately when a tenant moves out.
What type of lock is included with my unit?
Every unit includes a complimentary high-collar, weather-resistant combination padlock. The raised collar shields the shackle from bolt cutters and prying tools, and there is no key to lose. We provide it at no additional cost so every unit meets a high security standard from day one.
Can I access my storage unit at night?
Gate hours run 6 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week — early and late enough for before-work and after-dinner trips. LED lighting illuminates the entire property from dusk to dawn, and cameras record with night vision around the clock. Need access outside gate hours? Call us and we'll work it out.
What should I do if I notice something suspicious?
Contact us immediately at (785) 576-6234 or info@freestatestorage.com. If the situation appears to be an active crime or immediate threat, call 911 first. We take every report seriously and review surveillance footage promptly.
