KU Student Storage Guide: Summer Storage Near Campus in Lawrence, KS

Everything a Jayhawk (or a Jayhawk parent) needs to know about getting through summer break without hauling the dorm back across the state.

Why KU students use summer storage in Lawrence

Every May the same thing happens: finals end, the residence halls close within a day or two, and a few thousand students discover that a dorm room does not fit in a Civic. Student storage in Lawrence exists to break that cycle. Rent a small unit ten minutes from campus, move everything once, and come back in August to a one-hour errand instead of a cross-state haul.

Free State Storage sits at 2400 Franklin Rd, off K-10 on the southeast side of town — about ten minutes from Daisy Hill and the Jayhawk Towers. Students get 15% off any unit with a valid student ID, every unit is drive-up, and the whole rental happens on your phone.

When to book student storage near KU

The best units go in the first week of May, and the cheapest way to get one is to reserve before you need it. Your rate locks the day you book, not the day you move in, so there is no penalty for reserving early.

  • Reserve by mid-April for the cleanest selection of 5x10s
  • Spring break is when organized parents book — the unit sits empty and unpaid until your move-in date
  • Plan two hours for move-out, including the drive to the unit
  • Roommates who split a unit should book it under one name and settle up between themselves

What size storage unit does a dorm room need?

Most KU students fit comfortably in a 5x10 storage unit. Think of it as a walk-in closet with a roll-up door: the mini-fridge and microwave stack, boxes go three high along one wall, and the futon stands on end. Two roommates storing together, or anyone with a real couch, should step up to a 10x10. Sharing an apartment's worth of furniture with three friends? The same 10x10 splits four ways and still costs less per person than a parking ticket on Daisy Hill.

Not sure? The size finder takes about thirty seconds and asks what you are actually storing.

What fits in a 5x10 storage unit: two mattresses, a dresser, a loveseat, a filing cabinet and a stack of moving boxes
A 5x10 holds a full dorm room: mattress, dresser, loveseat, fridge, and a semester of boxes.

What to store and what to take home

A clean, gated, well-lit unit protects almost everything a student owns. The exceptions are food, anything you need over the summer, and anything you would be devastated to lose.

  • Store: textbooks, mini-fridge, microwave, futon, bedding, kitchen kit, bikes, winter clothes
  • Take home: laptop, chargers, prescriptions, passport, the clothes you will actually wear
  • Never store: anything perishable, even sealed — a Kansas July inside a metal unit is not a pantry
  • Label every box on two sides so the August unload is a five-minute job

Move-out day playbook

Boring is good. This is the order of operations that gets families through fastest, and it starts the night before.

  • Pack the night before — boxes labeled, tape cut, fridge defrosted and dried
  • Reserve online before you leave the dorm so the gate code is already on your phone
  • One person stages at the room, one hauls to the car, one drives — rotate
  • The gate opens at 6 AM, seven days a week; an early run beats the loading-dock line
  • Sweep the room last — RA inspections love a clean floor

Coming back in August

Reverse the process. Pull up to the door, load the car, and either close out the unit online or keep it through the school year for game-day gear, winter tires and the stuff a shared apartment never has room for. Rentals are month-to-month, so summer-only is genuinely summer-only: pay for May through August and give ten days notice when you are done.

Parents planning the logistics from a distance should read the companion guide, The KU Parent's Guide to Move-Out Week.

Common questions

How much does student storage cost in Lawrence, KS?

A 5x10 is the size most KU students rent, and students get 15% off any unit with a valid student ID (student and military discounts cannot be combined with each other or with the move-in offer). Rentals are month-to-month, so a summer runs about four months. Current pricing is on the unit pages and locks the day you reserve.

Can I rent a storage unit as a KU student without a parent co-signing?

Yes. The lease is signed on your phone and paid by card. You get your personal gate code the moment payment goes through, with no office visit and no paperwork to mail.

How close is Free State Storage to the KU campus?

About ten minutes. The facility is at 2400 Franklin Rd on the southeast side of Lawrence, just off K-10, which keeps it an easy run from Daisy Hill, the Jayhawk Towers and the apartments along Iowa Street and 23rd.
