Why “Free State”? The Lawrence, Kansas History Behind Our Name
The name on our gate is the name Lawrence fought for. A short history of the Free State cause — and why we put it on a storage facility.
1854: a town founded on purpose
Lawrence was not settled by accident of river or railroad. It was founded in 1854 by New England Emigrant Aid Company settlers who came west for one reason: to make sure Kansas entered the Union as a free state. The town was the capital of that cause — which made it a target from the day the first tents went up on Mount Oread.
Bleeding Kansas
The years before the Civil War turned the Kansas Territory into the war's first front. Pro-slavery forces sacked Lawrence in 1856; the Free State Hotel burned and the printing presses went into the river. The settlers rebuilt. Kansas entered the Union as a free state in January 1861 — the Free Staters won the argument the town was built to make. The Free State Hotel was rebuilt as the Eldridge, which still stands at 7th and Massachusetts.
1863: Quantrill, and the rebuild
On August 21, 1863, Quantrill's raiders burned Lawrence and killed more than 150 men and boys — one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the Civil War. Lawrence's answer is the part that defines the town: they buried their dead and rebuilt, bigger, in limestone this time. The city motto to this day is “From Ashes to Immortality.”
Why we put the name on the gate
We did not license the name from a branding agency. Our family is from Lawrence, and the name means something here.
A storage business earns trust the same way a town does: by being there, keeping what matters safe, and answering when called. Naming the place “Free State” is a promise to operate like we are from here. Because we are. You can read more about the family and the facility on the About page.
Where to stand in the history
If the history grabs you, Lawrence keeps it close: the Watkins Museum of History downtown, the 1863 raid markers along Massachusetts Street, the Free State Brewing Company in the old trolley barn, and the street grid itself — named for the states the Free State settlers left behind. Our gate at 2400 Franklin Rd sits about two miles south of where the town they built still stands.
Common questions
Why is Lawrence, Kansas called the Free State city?
Lawrence was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery settlers from New England specifically to help Kansas enter the Union as a free state. It was the headquarters of the Free State movement during Bleeding Kansas, was attacked for it in 1856 and 1863, and the name stuck.
Is Free State Storage connected to Free State Brewing?
No. Both take their name from the same Lawrence history, but they are separate, locally owned businesses. Free State Storage is family owned and operated by Midwest Storage Solutions.
